Our Mission Statement:
To provide a comfortable environment for diverse women to discuss fiction-based novels and current events in an intelligent and thought-provoking manner.
To be able to join together in the name of sisterhood in a social atmosphere and make a literary impact throughout the community.
Our Purpose:
Our purpose is to help support new African American fiction authors by offering them a platform to showcase their book. It is our hope to help support new authors by purchasing and discussing
their books. Other ways that we are committed to supporting new authors is offering to review their book, showcase their book on our website and possibly having them come discuss their book
with our book club.
Book Format:
The KC Girlfriends Book Club read fiction books written by African American authors.
Most of the books we read are written by new African American authors.
We do invite authors 3-4 times a year for discussions and book signings.
Book Suggestions:
Any member can suggest a book for the book club at any time. Members should be able to give a brief description of the book. The same member will also facilitate the meeting. Either the member
or representative will come up with the restaurant to hold the meeting.
Membership Enrollment:
The KC Girlfriends Book Club membership is limited to 30 members. We accept new members during the months of January, May and September. Acceptance of members is on a first come, first
serve basis. It is essential to submit membership as soon as possible.
Meeting  Date, Time, and Locations:
Meetings are held on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 4pm. Meetings will be held on the second Sunday if a holiday falls on our set meeting date. We generally dine in restaurants located in or close
to the Country Club Plaza, but can include any surrounding areas as well. Restaurants will be posted on the website on the KC Girlfriends Members page. We sit down promptly at 4pm with the
discussion to follow at 5:15ish. Evites are emailed one week prior to each meeting. Members and guests should respond to all Evites by the Saturday prior to meetings.
Dues:
Dues are $120 per year. Dues may be paid in one payment or in three easy payment installments in January, May and September. (There is a payment schedule that will be given to you after
you've joined.) New members must pay their dues either at the end of the first meeting that is attended or prior to the next meeting. Dues are non-refundable so it is important that you are certain
that you want to become a member prior to paying the fee.

What Will Your Dues Pay For?
  • Lodging and Traveling expenses for three well-known authors sponsored book signings.

  • Expenses for the KC Girlfriends Book Club Annual Literary Event
(this includes the fees for the space, food and the book that will be discussed. An author is invited to this event as well-Members may not omit their dues for this event even if they are unable to be present
but will still receive an autographed book from the featured author)

  • Community Service Projects that will be decided on by the members.

  • Dinner for visiting authors during hosted book club meetings. (Other author expenses may also apply)
  • Bookmarks/fliers/brochures/postcards used during events or members.

  • These are just the major items that would be paid for from annual dues. There may be other expenses incurred that could be paid for with dues.
Group Trips and Social Events:
This group's annual trip is to the National Book Club Convention in Atlanta, which is held on the 1st weekend of August each year.
NBCC website

We try to have one social event each month and other trips throughout the year.

We also have a literary retreat in June for the book club members where we invite author(s) to sit around with members during an evening of catered food, lively discussion about their book and our
book of the month.

We are a fun group of women to be around. The age range of our group is early 20's to late 40's. We have  20+ members. There's nothing better than discussing a great book while eating at some of
the best restaurants in the Kansas City area.

If the KC Girlfriends Book Club is the type of book club that you are looking to join please fill out the application on this page. We will send a brochure in the mail giving you the information about the
book club and meet and greet. We will add you to our Evite list which will be sent to you 1 week prior to the meeting. We will take you off the list if we haven't seen you after 2 Evites have been sent
to you. This just help to keep our list cleaned up. Please contact me with any questions.

KC Girlfriends Book Club's Member Qualifications:
We are always looking for new members. We are limiting our book club to 30 members.
Men are also welcome to join as Gentlemen of the KC Girlfriends Book Club.
You should love to read African American fiction.
You should be able to attend meetings on a regular basis. If you have a lot going on right now and can only make a few meetings a year please look into joining us during our radio show book
discussions on the 3rd Monday of each month instead. There is no need in you joining if we hardly see you.
Read the books every month regardless if you intend on attending the meeting. You can still join us during the radio show discussions if something comes up.
Read the books regardless if you like the book or not. There's still a discussion to be had telling us why you didn't like the book. You really can't have an opinion if you didn't read the entire book. This also
shows support for the members that chose the book.
We do not allow members to come to the meetings without reading the entire book. We cannot discuss books that have been half read. We are a book club first and a social group second. Only guests
that are sitting in our discussion for the first time is exempt from this rule.
Be willing to help support the book club and the members. We are starting to move in a new direction as far as helping to organize an annual literary event in the future, be more involved in the
community, etc. We'll need everyone to help out in one way or another. Also, other members have social events that come along from time to time. We like to support each other's interests as well.
We are a fun group and want members that can bring a new point of view to the table! We expect to have different opinions about the books. It just makes that discussion even more lively!
Know that we meet in various restaurants throughout the Kansas City Metro. Everyone will have to travel further than others at some point. This is unavoidable due to everyone living in different areas of
the city. We only meet once a month so it shouldn't be made a big deal of.
(Trust me this has been an issue for some new members, which is why it's being addressed)
These standards may sound a little bit harsh or maybe direct, but necessary. We really do want good members that are willing to make the time and effort to becoming an involved member of our group.
Unfortunately, due to us having an open membership it is even more necessary to get straight to the point and weed out the people that can not comply with these simple guidelines.
